Aloha from Maui!

Our first day at our island home away from home was Saturday May 1st.  "May Day" and in the islands "Lei Day".  It is the day they hold the annual Maui Onion Festival at Whalers Village Shopping Center just down the way from the Marriott.  If Tracy can celebrate the Dry Bean Festival and Stockton has the Asparagus Festival, then Maui can have their Maui Kula Onion Festival.  This was the 21st annual festival and the only time we have been here to see it.  The Maui Kula Onion is grown on the slopes of the Haleakala Volvano and is famous for being the sweet onion that is used in all kids of recipes.

Dedicated to the cultivation and promotion of the world-famous Maui Kula Onion, the Maui Onion Fesitval has been a signature event at Whalers Village since 1990.  It's attended by thousands of visitors and residents every year and features a number of different activities, entertainment, food booths and more.  They even have a raw onion eating contest!!

The festival centers around a contest between several famous chef's here in Hawaii.  They come to compete for the BEST recipe using the Maui Onion.  They also have booths to taste samples from the big restaurants and the chefs demonstrate their recipes and pass out samples.

We had a great time at the festival and enjoyed the many samples and of course, the onion rings!!

Hope you enjoy the pictures!
